Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
Matthew 28:18-20

The Purpose of the Church:

To fulfill The Great Commission and to follow The Great Commandment.

The Great Commission in 3 frames:

Authority. Responsibility. Promise.

Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.”
Matthew 28:18

The Son is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. For in him all things were created: things in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or powers or rulers or authorities; all things have been created through him and for him. He is before all things, and in him all things hold together. And he is the head of the body, the church; he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead, so that in everything he might have the supremacy. For God was pleased to have all his fullness dwell in him, and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.
Colossians 1:15-20

“If we pray that prayer, we shouldn’t be surprised if we are called upon to help bring about God’s answer to it.”
N.T. Wright

Therefore go and make disciples of all nations…
Matthew 28:19

Responsibility: Make disciples.

Disciples are those who have ordered their lives around being with, learning from, and becoming like Jesus.

“You can have many influences…but you can only have one King.”
Jeremy Treat

… Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.
Matthew 28:19b

Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? We were therefore buried with him through baptism into death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life.
Romans 6:3-4

And teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you…
Matthew 28:20a

“If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
John 8:31-32

… And surely, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.
Matthew 28:20b
